Fluid Bed Dryer (FBD) offers a lucid solution to drying of wet granules, crystalline or coarse materials. It utilizes the principle of passing the hot air at a high velocity through the bed of the material to be dried, thus causing it to fluidize.
The Fluid Bed Dryer have a bed of solid particles which are fluidized by passing a stream of air upward through a specially designed perforated sheet. The upward velocity of air is so maintained so as to slightly lift the solid particles and set them in motion. This motion can be utilized to bring about mixing as well as forward movement of the solids particles. The air is heated and the process hot air evaporates the fluid and dries the solids. Fines get agglomerated to larger granules particles thus providing large size. In a Fluid Bed Dryer, the temperature is distributed uniformly throughout the product and the heat rate is very high. High production rates are achieved because of reduced drying time. As the product is in close contact with the drying air at a low temperature and for a short duration, the physical and chemical properties of the product are not affected generally and hence the dryer can be effectively used in the case of heat-sensitive products. As the product is continuously moving during the drying process, there is minimal lump formation or case hardening.
